War is Deception and Get the High Ground
The art of strategy is really the art of deception. Many large corporations hire strategists for the sole purpose of outwitting their competitors. The heart of that type of business is to know how to deceive the competition. On the other hand, there are also corporations that desperately seek the higher ground. They look for opportunities where they can obtain the high ground before anyone comes into the arena. Then, they wait for competition and crush it when it comes because of their higher ground. The higher ground is basically intellectual property like patents, secrets, and capital that are difficult for the competitors to get.
Large Competitors Buy Small Competitors
What most large businesses do, is to look for competitors to buy. When large corporations see a small business that has superior technology and is taking away their market share, they seek to buy them out. Microsoft is a perfect example. Microsoft has bought out many small businesses that were doing innovative things. They are, in essence, purchasing the high ground while the company is still small and gaining that ground for themselves. It is a good strategy because as the company grows it may threaten them even more and also cost a lot more money to purchase.
If you are a small business, look for something that you can do better than a large corporation. After you get established and start taking the large companies business, they will offer to purchase you for the sole fact of getting you to go away. The large company may lose a few million, that is not very much to them, and yet it can make a small business owner feel rich and have enough to retire.
