Business Strategy Simulation
Sun Tzu said, "Simulated disorder postulates perfect discipline, simulated fear postulates courage; simulated weakness postulates strength."
These are important points to make. Even in today's military there are very expensive simulation exercises that take place to help soldiers learn courage, manage fear, and learn discipline. There are flight simulators and simulated battle fields to get soldiers ready for the real thing.
Bad Training is Word of Mouth
In a company, you can also do the same thing. Many companies lack any sort of real training program. You may work and learn by word of mouth and find that it takes a year or two just to weed out the bad information from the good. Of course, the work suffers, but nobody wants to sit down and write a manual. For one thing, the company can get rid of you if you can be easily replaced. This may be true for many companies, but it is actually a very bad habit and can culturally damage the company. In many construction companies, you are simply ridiculed and called names until you figure it out on your own or fight back.
Great Training is Thought Out and Simulated
A better way is to simply have a training program that works. This is not always a book of desk procedures or training videos. Instead, think of real life simulation. A great manager will create simulations for his/her team on a daily basis. Workers will not realize they are in a simulation, however, the manager will be creating simulations to develop discipline, courage, and strength in their workers. It is a lot better to learn this in real life, than to watch videos all day long or listen to lectures. The actually doing it in real life creates the most value. A manager might create distractions and then discipline the team to stay on task. They might create fear of losing a contract or big order, to help people find courage to create more revenue opportunities. There are many ways to apply the information, but without proper training and simulation, the workers will have less courage, less discipline, and be weaker.
