Get There First
Having a business is like running a race. Is it easier to come from behind and win or is it easier to start with a head start? It may seem like a no brainer, but it happens all the time. Companies decide to get into the market that someone else is deeply ingrained in. They hurry up production and design and by the time they get to the market they are exhausted. Then, the deeply entrenched firm, rested for battle, carefully finds a way to get rid of the new competitor.
The well established firm can pretend to help the new competitor and then crush them at close range or they can simply make it impossible for them to advance any further. Some large firms try to bring competitors in and show benevolence so that they can steal their ideas and know better how to crush them. Small firms should be wary of any large firm they work with.
If at all possible, get there first. We can all name the first guy to walk on the moon or the first president of the United States. Who can remember the second, third, and fourth? There is an marketing advantage to being first. People will remember you for that and it will bring you much goodwill in the market. You will also have an advantage of competition.
