Keep the Country Intact
A country should be kept intact. Likewise, it is better to keep an army intact than to destroy it. It takes too much energy to besiege and demolish a city. In addition, it doesn't do a lot of good. The point is to win the war, not cause the most damage. It is much better to take over something that is whole and functioning well than to take over a pile of rubble and wounded people.
Sun Tzu says it so well, “Hence, to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.”
