What Information do Spies Get
A spy should know who all the people in the organization are. They should know who the leaders are, who the guards are, and who the gatekeepers are. This is the basic information.
In business, a spy should seek to get proprietary secrets. They should seek to find out what is behind all the hidden doors.
Business Spies
Companies like to hire people from their competitors to find out what they can about the company operations. Many companies have no other way to compete. They have no intellectual advantage and play catch up with spy work.
If a spy gets a list of all the key personnel at a firm, the competitor can simply call down the list until they find someone that wants to spy for them or that wants to change jobs and come work for you.
Some evil companies use spies to steal company secrets that are legally protected. When these spies are caught, they can end up going to jail. The only thing is that the person may be paid a huge sum of money and disappear into another country.
Some large organizations, like Goldman Sachs, plant their people all over the fortune 500 and government. They are essentially spying on a lot of people to get information that nobody else will have and that they can profit from. It is like a boys club. The workers are officially not working for Goldman Sachs and yet they talk to each other and share information. They even get paid consulting fees from Goldman, from time to time. These fees are really just information trades from spying.
